BLOOD SHIT

 650

The milestone 650 donations I reached got you talking, lots of engagement, lots of likes and lots of discussion. It seems that we got you guys talking, but the reality is that we need you to talk less and bleed more. We need you bleeding because money can't buy what we give, and hope and prayer doesn't seem to be cutting it either.

I hit a milestone which has taken me 45 years to get to....amazing, legend, awesome...whatever. Not so, it is not legendary, it is a habit I got into that makes other people's lives better. Ask Michael Klim OAM, if it is life changing. He's a recipient of blood products and an Ambassador for the Australian Lifeblood organisation.

For my first donation I was at Brookie Oval Mobile Blood Unit with my auntie Mary, and for the next 74 donations I simply sauntered across the threshold of the Clarence Street Sydney Blood Bank every 3 months for nearly 19 years.

I was asked if I wanted to do more and discovered plasma donors could donate every fortnight....so off I went with a calendar that was now filled with 22 additional and new entries to add to the previous 4 scheduled blood bank visits. I was, from then on a plasma donor.

After 45 years of doing what my calendar tells me, I am at a loss to understand why the donor numbers do not ever climb.

Of 100 eligible people there are only 3 donating.

For 45 years I have been a part of the 3 percent of the eligible population who are doing the heavy lifting and providing products that money simply cannot buy. It cannot be bought. It needs to have us roll up a sleeve and donate our life giving, lifesaving body fluid that Taylor Bateman calls "LifeJuice". Suffice to say that Taylor is a recipient with a rare blood disorder and has needed us since she was 4. She is now 27 with a 3 year old and has one on the way. She'd be cactus without us 3 percenters.

Everybody knows someone that has been afflicted with cancer or is still in the fight against the insidious disease. What can you do for them? You think that there is nothing you can do? Think again, I have it, you can donate blood which will help them directly.

To err is human, but not to donate (in my world) is a crime.

The cancer patients are the largest users of blood products of any other group. They use more blood products than trauma victims, burns victims, and those with rare blood disorders.

C'mon you guys. I put the milestone story up with Ruth Harrison and Daragh Whelan so you would join me, not so you could talk about it.

Roll up a sleeve, I won't stop banging on about it and am unapologetic about that fact....it is so simple to do and simply put, we need more of you to donate blood. Join me.
